The purpose of these window decorators is to re-implement the look and feel of the traditional GNOME (Metacity) and KDE (KWin) desktops and default window managers in the Compiz environment. By default, GNOME-based Ubuntu systems running Compiz use the gtk-window-decorator window decorator, and Kubuntu (and other KDE) systems running Compiz use kde-window-decorator. This division of labor provides a flexible, easily extended desktop environment by enabling different window decorators to be used with a single compositing window manager. Luckily for all of us, one item they opted to port and update was Emerald, the window decorator used by Beryl.Īs discussed earlier, compositing window managers such as Compiz and Beryl focus on standard window management tasks and compositing, using a separate application to handle window decoration tasks. Once the Beryl and Compiz folks began working together, the Compiz Fusion project was formed to port many of the cool features and plug-ins that were created for Beryl so that they would work with Compiz. The Emerald window decorator, discussed earlier in this chapter in the section "Compiz History," was originally designed for use with the Beryl compositing window manager.
